Berkeley Food Network and Berkeley Friends Church Close Merger Discussions/Berkeley Friends Church Announces Closure of Berkeley Food Pantry

Berkeley Food Network (BFN) and Berkeley Friends Church have mutually agreed to conclude negotiations regarding the transfer of Berkeley Food Pantry operations. Both organizations entered discussions with the shared goal of ensuring continued and expanded food assistance for Berkeley/Albany residents. Through the negotiation process, it became clear that the structural requirements for a successful transition and continued operation of the Berkeley Food Pantry exceeded the current capacity of both parties, particularly in light of the impacts of the government shutdown and surging needs for food assistance. This mutual conclusion reflects a commitment to responsible stewardship of community resources.

Following this decision, Berkeley Food Pantry will cease operations after January 31st, 2026. The end of Berkeley Food Pantry operations presents an opportunity for the Berkeley community to assess and address food insecurity through collaborative efforts. It has never been more essential for coordination among these organizations in order to strengthen the overall support network for residents facing food insecurity.

Berkeley Friends Church appreciates the dedication of Berkeley Food Pantry staff and volunteers, whose work has served the community since 1969. BFN and Berkeley Friends Church will work together through January to ensure community members receive information about alternative food assistance resources in the area. BFN will also welcome volunteers to support the community through its organization.

Home delivery services currently provided by Berkeley Food Pantry represent a critical need in the community. BFN is exploring options to expand their own food delivery program to serve these clients after January 31st.
